What is Wholehearted Living

Wholehearted Living is a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness. It requires us to cultivate self-love and self-worth in order for us to feel worthy. Our sense of worthiness is only as strong as our own sense of self-worth and self-love. Therefore, wholeheartedness requires that we honor, love and take care of our bodies, mind and souls. To do this we have to be courageous, show up authentically, and let ourselves be seen and known. This practice of wholeheartedness allows us to live an imperfect, beautiful, amazing and inspiring life from the heart. Wholehearted Living, therefore teaches us how to embrace our imperfections, which are our gifts of beauty, and practice vulnerability, play and rest for the sake of our well-being and the the well-being of our community. As we learn to live a wholehearted life, we ease int gratitude and joy. 

Brene Brown

Brene Brown is an author, story teller and qualitative researcher. Her passion transformed from shame and guilt, to vulnerability and wholehearted living. In her research so found that there was a distinction between people that where resilient and those that got stuck in shame. After many years of research and behavior mapping, she has the realization that is was as simple as self-love. Those that got stuck in shame lack the ability to self-love. Many of them lived in anger and had a hard time 'bouncing back' from struggle. Those that displayed strong characteristics of resiliency presented strong practices of self-love, self-compassion, and vulnerability. They had coping mechanisms and tools that enabled them to bounce back from struggle. These individuals lived a Wholehearted Life. 


Brene Brown's 10 Guideposts

Through her research and many years of storytelling, Brene Brown created ten simple guideposts that help us cultivate a Wholehearted Life. They are: 

  1. Authenticity (Letting go of what people think!)

  2. Self-Compassion (Letting go of perfectionism!)

  3. Resilient Spirit (Letting go of numbing and powerlessness!)

  4. Gratitude and Joy (Letting go of scarcity and fear of the dark!)

  5. Intuition and Trusting Faith (Letting go of the need for certainty!)

  6. Creativity (Letting go of comparison!)

  7. Play and Rest (Letting go of exhaustion as a status symbol and productivity as self-worth!) 

  8. Calm and ‘Stillness’ (Letting go of anxiety as a lifestyle!)

  9. Meaningful Work (Letting go of self-doubt and supposed to!)

  10. Laughter, Song and Dance (Letting go of being cool and always in control!)  

Wholehearted Living as a Yoga Teacher

Brene Brown Does not Practice Yoga, but if you read her books without knowing that you would think that she is the Ultimate Yogi. Not because she hand stand on her hands with her foot behind her back (this is a misconception behind the word Yoga), but because she cultivate compassion, understanding, repetitive mantra, and spirituality (we are all interconnected). This is a nutshell is what the yoga practice is all about. It is about loving yourself as much as you love everything in the Universe, and loving the Universe as much as you love yourself. In our Yoga Teacher Training, this is the kind of practice we want ot instill in our trainees: love and be love.
